The findings of a survey conducted by the National Pro Bono Resource Centre show that the Australian Bars are supporting the community through considerable pro bono assistance by their members.
According to figures released by the centre last week, 87 per cent of the 355 barristers surveyed had done legal pro bono work in the past 12 months.
Those surveyed spent an average of 44.5 hours doing pro bono work in the past year, with a healthy 59 per cent undertaking more than 35 hours - which is the National Pro Bono Aspirational Target.
These figures are very encouraging and are bound to be discussed at this week's National Access to Justice and Pro Bono Conference in Sydney.
Access to justice for all Australians is fundamental to the rule of law and the stability of the community in general - and that's what the conference is all about.
